One of the main questions parents ask when considering online schooling is how it will affect their child's socialization. Concerns about socialization have been persistent despite solid research suggesting homeschooled children are on comparison happier, more socially engaged, more likely to volunteer, more satisfied with their friendships, and better able to engage not only with their peers but also with adults than their public school counterparts.

Gravitas students gain all the socialization benefits of homeschooling plus the benefits of live interaction with peers from around the globe. Here are some of the ways Gravitas supports socialization:

Live Online Classes, Competitions, and Projects with Peers from around the Globe

Unlike most online schools, Gravitas promotes real-time engagement with peers from around the globe through live online classes and Passion Academy competitions and project-based courses. Our master online teachers promote active learning and collaboration, and our students end up becoming friends across barriers that typically divide people from one another. Through Gravitas, you can make friends with amazing people you would never meet in a traditional or homeschool setting.

The Gravitas House System and Online Social Events

Outside of class, Gravitas promotes social interaction with peers across the grades 5-12 spectrum through our House System. Each student is assigned to a house, and houses compete for point throughout the year, in part through participation in events like game nights, lip sync battles, and student art galleries and musical performances.

Character Formation Program

The Gravitas Character Formation Program consists of daily lessons and challenges to help students grow in good qualities and resist temptations. Often the challenge of the day involves getting out into one's local community to volunteer, to seek wisdom from local mentors, to ask forgiveness and promote reconciliation, or to express gratitude.

Chapel, Advisory, and Growth Groups

Once a week, students gather together as a whole school for a chapel service, after which they break up into their growth groups with their advisor. Those small groups meet throughout the year to discuss the chapel talk, share progress on the character formation program, and connect with each other at a deeper level under the guidance of a wise mentor.

Physical Education

Rather than trying to replicate all aspects of a brick and mortar school online, Gravitas encourages students to join local club sports, dance, martial arts, and fitness programs in their local community. Students who live near one another can get together to go for walks, runs, or bike rides during the day, which our flexible class schedule allows.

On Campus Activities and Meet Ups

Throughout the year, Gravitas students who can make the journey are welcomed to the campus of The Stony Brook School to participate in select events. Additionally, the school will be hosting regional meet ups where students who live in a given location can connect. Check out our Calendar of Events for more information about upcoming in-person opportunities.

Summer Boarding Experience

Students who want a taste of boarding life to help them prepare for college while doing innovative hands-on classes and taking field trips to the beach and to New York City can sign up for the Gravitas summer boarding school experience.
